Webster Lake in KansasAlongside the Solomon River Valley, Webster Lake in Kansas provides a picture perfect site of rolling hills and skies that go on forever. With 3,700 acres of water, this lake and its adjacent state park offers a lot of outdoor activities. The reservoir was built in 1958 and added to the Kansas park system in 1965. For nature lovers, the surrounding prairie and rolling hills is a beautiful sight. Wildflowers and a myriad of native plants are abundant. Explore the surrounding countryside and enjoy a picnic under the shade of the large trees. Picnic shelters are also available. For water enthusiasts, five boat ramp lanes and three courtesy docks make launching your boat easy. The lake is usually uncluttered, so there is plenty of room for water skiing, windsurfing, and fishing. Boating, and other water sports are very popular in this 3,700 acre lake.
FishingFishermen will enjoy the walleye, wipers, crappie, catfish, bullhead, bass, and bluegill at Webster Lake in Kansas. Rainbow trout are also available in season. Anglers will appreciate the electric fish cleaning station and floating fishing docks.A fishing pier offering easy access is also available. Check the park office for fishing reports on where the best locations are for catching which species. The park also practices catch and release on smaller specimens. CampingCampers can enjoy any of 74 RV and trailer sites and over 100 primitive campsites. The campgrounds offer swimming beaches, horseshoe pits, sand volleyball courts, playgrounds, an amphitheater and hiking trails. Horseback riding is permitted on established roads.There is a single cabin to rent as well that can accommodate six people. Many of the camping facilities are ADA accessible. WildlifeWebster Lake in Kansas is also home to the 5,750 acre Webster Wildlife Area. This spot lets the public view mule and white-tailed deer, quail, pheasants, wild turkeys, kestrels, hawks, pelicans, doves, squirrels, songbirds and waterfowl.Look closely for painted turtles and great blue herons. Raccoons, mink and beaver are also local. The limestone cliffs along the trails are full of brown bats in the summer. Photographers and nature lovers alike will enjoy this area. Hunting is allowed in season in a special wildlife area for deer, waterfowl and upland birds. Special hunts are available at certain times of the year. To find out how to qualify, contact the park. Share your successful hunt in the Kansas Hunting Trophy Room Things To DoIf you want a little history and culture, just travel ten miles west of Webster Lake in Kansas to visit the Nicodemus National Historic Site. This area protects and preserves the only remaining western town built by African Americans after the Civil War. The site includes five buildings, including the town hall, an African Methodist Episcopal church, a First Baptist church, the St. Francis Hotel and a school house.A little further to the southeast is the Sternberg Museum of Natural History at Fort Hays State University. The fossil displays are spectacular. To the northwest is the Dane G.
