Toronto Lake

toronto lake Toronto Lake is a reservoir that is located in the southeastern corner of Kansas, along the Verdigris River valley, and is part of Cross Timbers State Park.

Located twelve miles west of Yates Center, this 2,800 acre reservoir is a fisherman's paradise of channel catfish, flathead catfish, black bass, bluegill, crappie, walleye and sunfish. In fact, this lake is rated number one for crappie fishing in the state.

The best places to catch crappie are in Mann's Cove, Walnut Creek and off the handicap fishing pier in Toronto Point. There are several boat ramps located around the lake for easy access that can now accommodate deeper boats.

Camping

Toronto Lake offers primitive campsites, RV sites and rustic cabins are available for those who wish to stay near the lake. Cabins can be reserved up to a year in advance, and you must bring your own bedding, soap and towels. The cabins come equipped with a bathroom, a shower, microwave, refrigerator, stove, table and chairs, dishes, glasses, silverware, toaster, coffee pot, a limited amount of cookware and sleeping space for several guests. Primitive sites cannot be reserved. Bathroom facilities are modern.

Trails

Guests who like to hike or bike on the local trails are in for a treat. There are two trails in Toronto Point. The Ancient Oaks Trail highlights some impressive old growth oak trees. This is the only trail that is open to foot traffic only. The Chautauqua Hills Trail is comprised of four connecting loops that offer spectacular prairie and woodland scenic views.

In Woodson Cove, there is the Overlook Trail. This is a challenging trail with sandstone outcroppings and steep ravines. It is strenuous and rewarding. There are two trails in Holiday Hills. The Blackjack Trail offers opportunities to observe native wildlife like deer, turkey and other creatures. The Oak Ridge Trail is great for novices, and leads you through a mixed forest of post oak, blackjack oak, American elm, red cedar, red bud, and dogwood.

A naturalist is available in the summer to provide interpretive programs on the weekends. Year-round, there are plenty of places to "get away from it all" and observe nature. A 1,075 acre preserve next to Toronto Lake features forested flood plains, open prairie and hills of oak savannah.

Wildlife

The Toronto Wildlife area, a 4,600 acre preserve, offers several species to observe. Native species include white-tailed deer, squirrels, quail, rabbits, doves, wild turkeys and raccoons. There are also many varieties of songbirds to delight visiting birdwatchers and photographers. Hunters will appreciate the upper half of Toronto Lake, where a large area has been set aside for public hunting of game, waterfowl and deer.
