Perry Lake in Kansas



Perry Lake in Kansas is located west of Kansas City and northeast of Topeka. This popular destination is home to many outdoor activities like fishing, horseback riding, geocaching and more. This area has a lot to offer visitors, so make sure you stop at Perry Lake.

Home to more than 300 campsites spread between 11 campgrounds, Perry Lake in Kansas also has two boat ramps, five shower houses, two dump stations and ten group shelter houses you can reserve. Four brand new rental cabins are now available, one of which is ADA compliant. Visitors must bring their own bedding, food and toiletries to use the cabins. Reservations are needed, just call the park office.

Trails

With 25 miles of horse trails at Perry Lake in Kansas, you have an excellent opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The horse trails wind through upland forest habitats, which creates wonderful opportunities to see wildlife and the native botanical species. If you prefer to hike or ride a mountain bike, there are 22 trails that take you through hardwood forest, bluffs and wooded hillsides. The trails here are known all over the country for its challenging design.

Geocoaching

Geocaching is the newest treasure-hunting craze. Join in the game with a GPS and try to follow clues to hidden clues. Prizes are available to be won, so join in the fun while enjoying the great outdoors. While you're hunting for treasure, enjoy the wildlife. White pelicans, egrets and deer make frequent appearances. Frequent group trail rides and the annual "Ride for Hunger" charity trail ride are organized in the park. Be sure to check the park schedule if there are any events in which you'd like to take part. Fishermen can enter any of the many fishing tournaments to add a little extra excitement to their trip.

Fishing

Speaking of fishing, with 11,630 acres of water, there is plenty to catch! Walleye, sauger, saugeye, bass, catfish, sunfish, crappie and bluegill are the primary sport fish to be caught at Perry Lake in Kansas. A fish cleaning station is located in the park for your convenience. Check with the park for local fishing reports and forecasts. Try your hand in a fishing tournament, or just catch enough for a dinner over the campfire.

Wildlife

There are 10,500 acres of wildlife refuge. Several years have been spent converting cropland into marshes and replacing the cool season grasses with the native warm season grasses. Invading plant species are being removed and replaced with native shrubs.

Hunting and trapping are allowed seasonally. Game bird hunting is a popular pastime, though you need a good hunting dog because of the dense vegetation in the area. Cottontail rabbits are plentiful and healthy. There are also doves, deer and pheasant. There are special hunting areas for handicapped hunters and areas designated for Mentor/Youth hunting.

If you prefer to do your hunting with a camera, there are many opportunities to get some great photos of the local wildlife and plants. Each season will give you different photo ops, so visit frequently.
