Kirwin ReservoirYou can find Kirwin Reservoir in Kansas amidst rolling hills along the North Fork of the Solomon River valley. The surrounding area is a combination of tall grass prairie and short grass plains. The nearby wildlife refuge covers 10,778 acres of grasslands, shorelines, open water, wetlands, croplands and wooded areas. The wildlife refuge is for all native wildlife, but there is an emphasis on migratory birds. The lake covers 5,000 acres and has a maximum depth of 49 feet in spots. WildlifeFor those who enjoy observing wildlife, there is a colony of black tailed prairie dogs on the south end of the lake. You may also see black tailed jackrabbits, thirteen lined ground squirrels, burrowing owls, mule deer, horned larks, meadow larks, kingbirds, kestrels and red tailed hawks.Great blue herons grace the shallow waters of the lake, and double crested cormorants are frequent visitors. Yellow headed blackbirds can be found in the marsh, and black billed magpies can be seen in the woods. Wild turkeys, white tailed deer and butterflies can also be seen from time to time. On the water, you may enjoy photographing ducks, geese, pelicans, and gulls. In the winter, Kirwin Lake in Kansas is home to bald and golden eagles, rough legged hawks and literally thousands of mallards and Canadian geese. There are many species of reptiles and amphibians living at the lake as well. HuntingFor hunting enthusiasts, Kirwin Lake in Kansas offers bow hunting for deer. Hunters can bag pheasants, doves, waterfowl, quail, prairie chickens, wild turkeys, snipe, cottontail rabbits, coots, and fox squirrels. Hunting other species is not allowed, and all hunters must possess valid hunting licenses with the appropriate stamps and permits. Game that has been pursued into No Hunting areas may not be retrieved.FishingAnglers at Kirwin Lake in Kansas can haul in black crappie, walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, green sunfish, white bass, bluegill, channel cats and wipers among other sportfish. In fact, Kirwin is famous for its crappies. Fishing is allowed year round.Be sure and check the fishing reports before you take your trip to get the most out of your fishing time. If you like to take part in fishing tournaments, be sure and check their calendar. In May, the American Bass Anglers hold two tournaments here. Plan ahead and join in the fishing fun all summer long. CampingPrimitive camping is permitted in designated areas only near the dam. They offer environmental education programs throughout the year on topics such as bald eagles, migratory birds, fishing and the wildlife refuge. Be sure to check the calendar to see when they are held. Boating access is available on the south shore, although boats are not allowed at certain times of the year.For those not interested in primitive camping, hunting and fishing lodges are located in some areas near the lake. Some coordinate group hunts or fishing trips. Some also allow you to bring your hunting dogs with you, so call ahead and ask when making reservations. Kirwin Lake Information
