The states different regions of climate, topographic and vegetative growth is what gives Kansas such a variety of hunting. Here's a quick look at the breakdown of the different regions in Kansas and what hunting opportunity awaits you.

Where to Hunt In Kansas

Northcentral part of the state is the Smoky Hills: This region has vast areas of rolling grassland with the land along the river bottom being farmed. The combination of permanent native cover and farmed land, makes this area good for pheasant, quail, prairie chicken, turkey, and deer hunting.

Far northeastern corner of the state: Features rolling plains with broad stream valleys. It is heavily timbered with rocky hillsides and small irregular croplands. Which makes this area good for deer, turkey, quail, rabbit, and squirrels.

Western one-third of the state known as the High Plains: consist of farmed land, native grass and almost treeless. The CRP program has created thousand of acres of native grass. Pheasant hunting is the number one game to hunt in this region. But you will also find Mule deer as well as whitetails.

East-central portion of the state or more commonly known as the Flint Hills: Most of this region remains native grass, as most of the land is untillable do to a rock layer just below the surface. Combine this large area of native grass, along with heavy timbered draws. The Flint Hills region is best known for it's deer, turkey, quail and greater prairie chicken.

Center of the state: This region consist of several wetlands, prairies, croplands and salt marshes. This proves to be good for pheasant, quail, whitetail deer, turkey and other small game species. Years with heavy rain will attract an significant number of waterfowl due to the flooded croplands and wetland areas being full.

Southwest part of the state: Most of this area is sandhill grasslands which makes ideal habitat for lesser prairie chicken. The grass prairies have sandhill plum thickets and eastern red cedars. This area is good for quail, pheasant, deer and turkey.

Southeastern one-quarter of the state: This area consist of rolling grasslands, limestone bluffs, and heavily timbered bottomlands. Due to the great timber cover this area is excellent for deer, squirrel, quail and turkey. There are 18 counties in region 5 they are Allen, Anderson, Bourbon, Chautauqua, Cherokee Coffey, Crawford, Elk, Franklin, Greenwood, Labette, Linn, Lyon, Montgomery, Neosho, Osage, Wilson and Woodson.

Southend of the southeastern quarter of the state is known as the Chautauqua Hills: The rolling tallgrass prairie and thick timbered bottoms and draws. Provides excellent deer, turkey and quail hunting.
