Kanopolis Lake in KansasKanopolis Lake in Kansas is located in the rolling hills of the Smoky Hills region. This is only 33 miles southwest of Salina. Kanopolis State Park was the first park designated in Kansas in 1955. This park also manages nearby Mushroom Rock State Park with its unusual geologic formations.
TrailsThere are several trails to use at Kanopolis Lake in Kansas. All the trails inside the park are open year round except the Prairie Trail and the Alum Creek Trail, which are closed during hunting season.There are three trails open to hikers and mountain bikes and two that are open to horseback riding. This is one of the few parks that allow horse access. They even have special accommodations for horses at the Rockin K campground. WildlifeThe wildlife viewing area is 40 acres in the Horsethief area of the park. It has an ADA accessible trail that circles through a marsh and around two ponds. It features five photo blinds and an observation deck.This area is popular with photographers, birdwatchers and animal lovers of all ages. Eagles and ospreys can be seen in the winter as they fish in the river. Songbirds are plentiful, as are many of the native game animals. There is also a prairie dog town where visitors can watch the antics of these little creatures. CampingThere are several camping areas around Kanopolis Lake in Kansas, including the Rockin K, which is especially set up for equestrians. Corrals are available for stabling. The other campgrounds offer showerhouses and are near the many amenities of the park.Besides the several campgrounds, there are two cabins available for reservation. They sleep six and contain many modern amenities. Visitors must bring their own bedding. FishingAnglers will appreciate the many species of fish to be caught at Kanopolis Lake in Kansas. Fishing is available year round, including the occasional ice fishing in the winter when the weather permits. Crappie, bluegill, catfish, bass, saugeye, walleye, wipers and trout are the favorites that live in the lake. For kids, the park offers a special children's fishing pond.HuntingHunters will enjoy a wide variety of game. Deer, spring turkey and upland birds like pheasant and quail are abundant. Waterfowl like ducks and geese are also plentiful. Some of the trails are closed during hunting season to park visitors for their own safety.Approximately 11,000 acres of land managed by Corps of Engineers is open to Public Hunting. The majority of the land is located at the upper end of the lake along the Smoky Hill River. KDWP manages several thousand acres for waterfowl refuge. A special concessionaire provides guided trail rides, pony rides and stage coach and covered wagon rides for visitors who don't have their own horses but would like to do horse-related activities.AmenitiesOther amenities in the park include fish cleaning stations, boat ramps, playgrounds, beaches, shelters, an amphitheater, a jet ski beach, a ball field, a working marina, a swimming beach and a kids' fishing pond.
