Glen Elder Lake in KansasLocated 12 miles west of Beloit, Kansas, Glen Elder Lake in Kansas and its adjoining park was voted one of the top five state parks in America by Field & Stream magazine in 2004. One of the largest lakes in Kansas at 12,586 acres, Glen Elder, which is also known as Waconda Lake, is a great place for boating, hiking, swimming, outdoor sports, fishing and other activities.
TrailsFor hikers, the Woodlands Trail offers a short forested trail that runs parallel to the fishing pond. It offers a good look at several native species of trees. Another short trail is the Sunflower Trail, which highlights trees like honey locust, green ash, cottonwood and hawthorn.The Native Trail shows hikers the beauty of the prairie grass, wildflowers and flat cottonwood trees. For those also interested in history, the Waconda Springs Replica Trail offers a short jaunt to see the Great Waconda Springs replica of the legendary mineral springs that was covered by the lake when the dam was built. This is located in the Heritage Village, which features historical displays and reconstructions of some of the better known landmarks of the past like the Hopewell Church. Glen Elder EventsThere are several events scheduled at Glen Elder Lake in Kansas every year. In April they host a Turkey Federation Youth Hunt and the Waconda Lake Association (WLA) Fish-a-Thon begins. It runs until September first.In May, the KWA Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament, the Glen Elder State Park Fun Run and the Youth Fishing Tournament. July is the time for the Eagles Fireworks, the WLA Volleyball Tournament and the WLA MusicFest. In August, Glen Elder Lake in Kansas is home to the WLA Catfish Tournament. FishingFishermen will enjoy the wide variety of sports fish available. Walleye, several varieties of bass, crappies, bluegill, wiper and a couple varieties of catfish provide a lot of sport and good eating.Regular fishing reports are available to advise anglers of the best fishing holes and what bait is working at the time. If you're there at the right time, join a tournament! Angler access has been increased around the lake with more pull-offs and shoreline improvements. WildlifeFor those who enjoy wildlife, there are plenty of game animals to see, photograph, or hunt during the proper season. Deer, pheasant, waterfowl and migratory birds like teal, doves, geese and sandhill cranes have a season and a bag limit.Share your successful hunt in the Kansas Hunting Trophy Room Non-game species like eagles can be seen at different times of the year. Eagles are more prevalent in the winter, for instance.Glen Elder Wildlife Area has almost 13,200 acres surrounding the Reservoir. AmenitiesGlen Elder Lake in Kansas also offers a lot of water fun. A full service marina is available for boaters from April through October. Swimming, sailing, water skiing and other water sports are enjoyed all over the lake.Other amenities include the nearby Cawker City Park artificial golf course, volleyball courts, softball diamonds, a reservable group shelter, a fishing pond, swimming beaches, and a fish cleaning station.
