El Dorado LakeEl Dorado Lake can be found just north and east of El Dorado, Kansas in the Flint Hills. The lake, constructed in 1981, provides about 8,000 acres of water to enjoy. Local hunters can enjoy about 6,000 acres of public hunting areas. The adjacent park covers about 4,000 acres of recreational land.
CampingThere are four main campgrounds that provide 1,100 campsites, including both primitive and utility sites. There are five camping cabins and five deluxe cabins for those who prefer a little more comfort when visiting the lake. Some cabins are handicapped accessible.Deluxe cabins include many amenities including screened porches, kitchen appliances, air conditioning, heat, lofts and barbecue grills. Visitors must bring their own bedding, linens, utensils, toiletries and food. Call for reservations if you want to use a cabin. They are very popular. Showers, laundry and restroom facilities are located in various spots around the campgrounds and are available for campers from the various types of campsites. Playgrounds, fish cleaning stations, dump stations, shelters, a children's fishing pond, and other amenities are found at the various campgrounds. TrailsIf you like nature trails, El Dorado Lake has many to choose from. The Teter Nature Trail is a short interpretive trail named after the Teter family, who owned and took care of this area for many years.The Walnut Ridge Trail is another short trail open to hikers and mountain bikers that takes visitors through dense timber and along the scenic Walnut River, where wildlife is abundant. The Double Black Diamond Mountain Bike Trail is two miles long. It offers cyclists a challenge through steep grade changes, rock outcroppings and water crossings. The Walnut River ADA Trail is about three miles long. It is open to hikers, cyclists and wheelchairs. It offers views of the entire campground, it crosses the river three times and gives access to the swim beach. The Linear Trail runs from the city of El Dorado to the Walnut River Campground. The Shady Creek Nature Trail is another interpretive trail that goes through the wetlands, giving opportunities to observe the waterfowl and other creatures that inhabit the wetlands. In the spring, fawns are often seen, as this area is a favorite birthing area for the white-tail deer. If you like to go horseback riding, the Boulder Bluff Horse Trail is a 12 mile trail that follows the shoreline of El Dorado Lake. The trail is being extended twenty more miles. Horse camping is available with facilities to care for your horses. FishingAnglers can have fun hooking catfish, bass, walleye, wiper, trout, bullhead, bluegill and sunfish. Fishing tournaments are held periodically, and fishermen can choose to fish from piers or on the water in boats. Fishing forecasts and reports are available at the parks. Once you've fished El Dorado Lake, you'll be back.HuntingHunters can enjoy the large areas reserved for wildlife hunting. White-tail deer, game birds, waterfowl, rabbits and other game are abundant. A youth deer hunt is held annually in September. The hunting area is made up of grass prairie, woodlands and croplands.El Dorado Lake Information
