Council Grove ReservoirThirty miles south of Topeka, you will find Council Grove Reservoir. It is located near the town of Council Grove, where the Osage Indians signed the treaty that created the Old Santa Fe Trail. The lake was constructed between 1960 and 1964. Council Grove Reservoir is home to five playgrounds, a marina, eight boat ramps, a swimming area, two picnic sites, and 181 campsites spread among Canning Creek Cove, Kit Carson Cove, Marina Cove, Neosho, Richey Cove, Custer and Santa Fe Trail Parks. This is a great place to take the family to fish or have fun. Surrounded by rolling hills full of hardwood forests, this lake is a beautiful spot to enjoy nature, go fishing or take a camping trip.
Fishing/Hunting/TrailsThe lake covers 3,310 acres, providing ample room for boating, fishing, water skiing, swimming and other water activities. Council Grove is well known for its crappie fishing. Catfish are plentiful, too, and Council Grove Reservoir receives stockings of saugeye.If you like to hunt, there are large populations of prairie chickens, turkeys, pheasant, quail and deer. Rabbits, squirrels and waterfowl are also available for hunting. There are plenty of wildlife opportunities for photographers and nature lovers to enjoy. Council grove has 2,638 acres of wildlife area and water at the upper ends of the lake. Share your successful hunt in the Kansas Hunting Trophy Room Activities on the shore of Council Grove Reservoir include hiking, biking, sightseeing and enjoying the historic sites. An all-terrain vehicle area has been set up below the dam in the Outlet Channel East region. Things to Do and SeeOf historical interest is the Council Oak, which is a stump of the large oak tree under which the Osage tribe and Kit Carson signed the treaty to allow the trail to proceed through the tribal lands. This tree is now a National Registered Historic Site. The history in this region dates back to 1541, when Coronado traveled through this area. The Kansas Memorial Building in nearby Topeka is home to a sword found on the Kansas plains that belonged to one of Coronado's men.The town of Council Grove is also a historic landmark, and it contains many sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Kaw Methodist Mission that was first established in 1849. The Last Chance Store was built in 1857 to provide wagon train travelers with their last chance to buy supplies until they got to Santa Fe. The Old Hays Tavern was built in 1857. The Custer Elm is a tree that sheltered General George Custer and his cavalry in 1867. The Madonna of the Trail Monument, the Old Bell Monument and Father Padilia's Monument all are worth a visit from those interested in the history of the United States. Don't forget the Pioneer Jail and the Monument to the Unknown Indian on your trip, either. If you plan to visit Council Grove Reservoir, be sure to make time to see the rich diversity you'll find in this area.
