Clinton Lake in KansasClinton Lake in Kansas is located in the northeastern corner of the state, and has a wonderful State Park available so visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature. With nearly 600,000 visitors a year, this popular destination offers prime fishing, hunting, wildlife photography and hiking. This beautiful lake is a great spot to take the family. There are 1500 acres in the park to enjoy, with activities ranging from biking, horseback riding, hiking and disc golf.
TrailsFor hikers, there are several trails, including one for winter use for cross country skiing. Trails range from three-quarters of a mile to the five mile ski trail to a 25 mile hiking and biking trail. For equestrian enthusiasts, horseback riding is allowed on the southeast side of the Rock Creek arm near the wildlife refuge.Wildflowers and prairie grasses are abundant during the growing months, providing beautiful scenery to enjoy and photograph. Even with all the recreational facilities in this park, there is a good balance with natural areas so you can truly enjoy the natural surroundings. WildlifeIf you like wildlife, there is a wildlife refuge located on the upper end of Clinton Lake in Kansas. Ranging over 9,000 acres, this wildlife area features a mix of grassland, forest, croplands and wetlands. Around 160 of those acres are manmade wetlands, including the Coblentz Marsh complex and the Elk Creek Marsh complex. The refuge is home to waterfowl, turkey, deer, mourning dove, bobwhite quail, rabbits and squirrels.Non-game birds, reptiles, amphibians and other mammals also range freely here. There are ample opportunities for photography and viewing of these animals. The wildlife refuge is closed to the public from October 1 through January 15. The park office also offers a display of live native animals that you can visit, complete with a short tour to learn all about them. Hunt and FishIf you like to hunt and fish, Clinton Lake in Kansas is a wonderful destination. Daily hunting permits can be applied for if you wish to hunt waterfowl. If you prefer fishing, Clinton Lake is home to many species of game fish including bluegill, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, green sunfish, large and smallmouth bass, sauger, walleye, white bass, wiper and blue catfish.CampingThe park around Clinton Lake in Kansas offers three campgrounds with a grand total of 460 camping sites, several boat ramps, a marina, a picnic area, a beach and a fish cleaning station. Many of the facilities are accessible for those with disabilities.For families, there are four playgrounds, a kids' trout fishing pond, and two 9-hole disc golf courses, so bring your Frisbees! A bike skills course is available to try, as well as an archery range, volleyball, an eagle observation blind and a children's discover trail. If you bring pets, there are rules about keeping control of your animals that must be followed. Reservations are required during peak season from April to September. During the off season, they are not required. In October, don't miss the Field Dog Trials hosted by the Heartland Coursing Association.
