Cheney Reservoir KansasCheney Reservoir is located west of Wichita, Kansas. The park is located on the southern end of the lake, on both the east and west sides. Completed in 1964, the lake offers excellent fishing and camping facilities, along with several cabins and other amenities.
SailingSome of the major events at Cheney lake include sailing regattas. The sight of over 100 colorful sailboats gliding on the lake is breathtaking. Whether you enjoy sailing yourself or you prefer to watch the graceful sailboats from the shore, it is a sight to see. The Ninnescah Sailing Center is located on the west shore of the lake, and is the place to go for all your sailing needs. A full-service marina caters to the needs of boaters and fishermen on the east shore.FishingCheney Reservoir offers terrific fishing. Channel catfish, crappie, bass, wipers, walleye, carp and perch are all prolific in the lake and offer some challenging fishing. Full fishing reports and forecasts are available at the park. Boating, water skiing, and other water sports are also popular. Swimming beaches are available on both sides of the lake.TrailsIf you prefer to stay on the land, Cheney Reservoir offers an interpretive trail at Geifer Creek. It is open to hikers and mountain bikers. Spring Creek Wildlife Observation Trail runs through a wetland and along a stream. It is a wonderful place to get up close and personal with the native wildlife. Be sure to bring your camera. You may capture a roadrunner or egret in your travels, or maybe a group of deer.HuntingHunting is allowed only in designated areas with permits. A shooting range is available for target practice. Target practice is not allowed in hunting areas. A waterfowl report is available from the park.Share your successful hunt in the Kansas Hunting Trophy Room CabinsThere are many ADA facilities available at Cheney Reservoir, including a fishing jetty, campgrounds and one of the cabins. Six other cabins are also available to rent. Cabins are equipped with beds, kitchens, a dining table and a grill. Campers must bring their own bedding, toiletries, linens, kitchen utensils and food. The cabins offer heat and air conditioning. Pets are not allowed in the cabins.CampingFor campers who don't want a cabin, there are 150 primitive sites and 145 sites that offer water and electricity on the east side of the lake. The west side offers 245 campsites with water and electricity. Boat ramps, shower houses, shelters and other amenities are available as well. Dump stations are available for those traveling with RVs.Be sure to check the park calendar for upcoming events you may want to attend. Besides sailing regattas, the park is host to many once-in-a-lifetime events like the Antiques Roadshow or other unique activities.
